Shapes are at the heart of strong design. Learning to see and use them well can totally transform how you paint, sketch, and create, giving your work a solid foundation and making it so much more interesting to look at.
In this class, I'm sharing my shape language approach, a way of thinking and working that helps you simplify what you see, stylize the way you want, and start developing a visual style that feels genuinely yours. I use this in everything I make, from character sketches to environment concepts to what might look like loose, flowing brushstrokes but is really a personal visual library I've been building for years.
We'll look at some of my favorite master artists and how they use shapes in their paintings. I'll also walk you through my own work and show you how this approach helps me simplify and make creative decisions with more confidence.
Here's what we'll explore together:
How good shapes work in both realistic subjects and more stylized simplified paintings
How master artists used shape language for people, environments, and stronger compositions
Simplifying without losing what makes your subject interesting
Building your own brushstroke library and visual habits
How to create your own inspiration collection to fuel your style
For the hands-on demo, we'll paint a still life together from sketch all the way through color and light. I'm also including a downloadable color palette for the project and a moodboard full of yummy, colorful brunch-inspired still life references for extra fun practice.
This class is for beginners and intermediate artists who want to feel more confident, paint with more intention, and really start developing their own style. You don't need any special experience. Just bring your curiosity and let's make some awesome art together.
